Art is not merely created; it is unearthed—layer by layer, texture by texture, from the depths of memory and experience. Deepa Anand’s practice is an ongoing dialogue with nature, a meditation on time, transformation, and regeneration. Her works are not just visual compositions but tactile landscapes, where earth-bound textures and ephemeral impressions converge to form a language of their own.
With over 15 years of experience, Deepa’s artistic journey has been one of relentless exploration. Rooted in her early years in Kota, Rajasthan, her practice draws from the arid yet vibrant terrain of her homeland. The muted ochres of the desert, the whispering browns of ancient trees, and the transient play of light and shadow seep into her canvas. Her process is one of immersion—she gathers fragments of the world during her morning jogs: fallen twigs, dried leaves, shards of bark—each a relic of time’s passage. Alongside these organic remnants, she integrates industrial elements like nuts, bolts, and gauze, creating a striking juxtaposition between nature and human-made structures. These materials, once overlooked, find new resonance within her compositions, seamlessly woven into the fabric of her art.
Inspired by her grandmother, who pursued art at a time when few women did, she embraced the artistic path with conviction. After studying at SNDT Mumbai Women’s University and a stint in web design, she redirected her creative energy entirely towards painting. Over the last 15 years, she has exhibited widely across Mumbai and India, continually pushing the boundaries of her practice.
Texture is the soul of her work. She carves, scrapes, and layers, allowing materials to dictate their own rhythm. The interplay of natural and industrial elements—gauze binding fragments, bolts fastening memory—mirrors the coexistence of fragility and endurance. Her evolving experiments now include handmade paper, further dissolving the line between material and meaning.
Runner-up of the WADE Asia Award 2024 (Painting in Excellence), Deepa’s art is a conversation between permanence and impermanence, between what grows and what lingers. The deeper one looks, the more the works reveal—memories etched in form, stories embedded in texture, and the quiet pulse of a tree that continues to breathe beyond its roots. In her works, one does not merely see a tree; one remembers it.
